Challenge

Atlas was a friendly, social Labradoodle who loved meeting people and other dogs, but he needed greater reliability and self-control. His family wanted help addressing situational marking outside the home, inconsistent leash manners and recall, jumping on people, basic obedience, and overexcitement around doors. After seeing little improvement from a previous group training class, they realized Atlas needed more focused, one-on-one attention.

Training Focus

During Atlas’s four-week private training program, we focused on building clear communication, dependable responses to cues, and better decision-making through positive reinforcement, gentle guidance, and consistent practice. Training emphasized recall, basic obedience with implied duration, leash manners, calm greetings, reduced jumping, door and threshold manners, impulse control, and greater reliability in different environments. Sylvana and Connor were also given structured homework so they could reinforce each lesson between sessions and remain actively involved in Atlas’s progress.

Result

Atlas’s family describes him as “truly a different dog.” He now understands his cues, listens more consistently, and wants to make the right choices because expectations are clear and successful behavior is rewarded and praised. His recall became solid, and his overall obedience improved dramatically. What his family originally expected might require more than four weeks was successfully accomplished through an honest, focused four-week program.

The Story

Atlas's journey

When Sylvana and Connor contacted Building Better Dogs, Atlas was a young Labradoodle who was naturally friendly, social, and enthusiastic about meeting both people and other dogs. Although he had previously attended a group training class, his family had not seen the level of improvement they needed. Their goals were to address Atlas’s situational marking outside the home, improve his leash manners, strengthen his recall and basic obedience, reduce jumping on people, and teach him to remain calm around doors. More than anything, they wanted Atlas to become a well-mannered, dependable companion who could respond reliably in different environments. Because Atlas needed focused attention tailored to his individual behavior, Ron recommended a four-week private training program. The program combined one-on-one instruction with clear information, practical demonstrations, and consistent homework for the family. The training focused on helping Atlas understand what was expected of him and making the correct behavior rewarding. Through positive reinforcement, gentle guidance, clear cues, and consistent follow-through, Atlas began listening more reliably and making better choices. Sylvana and Connor remained committed to the homework, which helped keep everyone accountable and allowed Atlas to practice his new skills consistently between training sessions. By the end of the four weeks, his recall was solid, his understanding of cues had improved, and the family described the difference in his obedience as “night and day.” His family originally believed Atlas might need more than four weeks of training. Ron explained from the beginning that four weeks should be sufficient, and Atlas’s results proved him right. For Sylvana and Connor, the experience demonstrated that effective training does not have to be unnecessarily extended—it needs to be honest, individualized, and supported by consistent work at home. Today, Atlas is more responsive, more reliable, and better able to make good choices. Just as importantly, his family has the communication skills and structure needed to continue building on everything he learned.
Client Testimonial
"“We had Ron work with our dog, Atlas, for four weeks and honestly… best decision we could’ve made. Before this, we did a group training class and didn’t see much improvement, so we knew Atlas needed more one-on-one attention. Hiring Ron for private training was exactly what we needed. Ron is incredibly honest and knows what he’s doing. He gave us tons of information and homework, which we actually loved because it kept us accountable. Atlas is truly a different dog now. He understands cues, listens, and wants to do the right thing because he knows it’s rewarded and praised. His recall is solid, his obedience is night and day, and it’s honestly kind of crazy to see the difference. We fully expected to need more than four weeks, but Ron told us from the start that four weeks would be enough and he was right. That alone says so much about his integrity. No upselling, no dragging things out. Just honest training that works. Atlas loves him, and Ron was always available if we had questions. We’re so grateful to have had him in our corner, and when we get our second pup someday, he’ll 100% be our first call.” — Sylvana Hare"
