Josie

Owner: Jan

Challenge

When Jan reached out, Josie was a friendly nine-month-old Beabull with plenty of potential but no previous formal training. She pulled constantly on leash, struggled with impulse control inside the home, jumped on people, chewed household items, and occasionally barked. Josie also refused to get into the car, running in the opposite direction when Jan tried. Jan felt overwhelmed and discouraged. She knew Josie could succeed but was unsure how to communicate with her or bring out her best.

Training Focus

Josie’s training focused on creating a clear foundation built on trust, communication, and consistency. We worked on leash manners, basic obedience, Sit and Down with implied duration, calm greetings without jumping, household impulse control, appropriate chewing behavior, and greater confidence around getting into the car. Just as importantly, Jan learned how to guide Josie calmly and continue reinforcing each skill at home. Written instructions were provided every week, creating a training reference Jan could continue using after the program ended.

Result

Josie became more confident, relaxed, responsive, and successful. Jan gained the knowledge and confidence to continue her training at home, and their bond grew stronger than she had thought possible. The transformation extended beyond individual behaviors. Their home became calmer and happier, with considerably more trust, understanding, and joy between Jan and Josie.

The Story

Josie's journey

When Jan first contacted Building Better Dogs, she felt overwhelmed, discouraged, and uncertain about how to help Josie. Josie was a friendly nine-month-old Beabull with no previous formal training and tremendous potential, but Jan did not yet know how to bring out the best in her. Josie pulled constantly during walks, struggled with impulse control inside the house, jumped on people, and chewed inappropriate household items. She also occasionally barked and strongly resisted getting into the car, often running in the opposite direction when Jan tried. The goal was not simply to stop unwanted behavior. Josie needed a clear foundation that would help her understand expectations, develop confidence, and learn how to make better choices. Jan also needed practical tools and guidance that would allow her to communicate clearly and continue Josie’s progress at home. From the first session, the training emphasized patience, compassion, calm guidance, and understanding Josie as an individual dog. There was no judgment or intimidation. Josie was given the structure and encouragement she needed to learn successfully while Jan was taught how to guide her with greater confidence. Training focused on leash manners, foundational obedience, Sit and Down with implied duration, calm greetings, household impulse control, appropriate chewing choices, and building confidence around getting into the car. Jan received written instructions each week explaining how to practice and reinforce Josie’s training. Those instructions became a reference book she could review whenever she needed guidance, helping ensure that the lessons continued well beyond each individual session. As Josie began understanding what was expected, her confidence grew. She became more relaxed and successful, while Jan became more comfortable and confident in her ability to guide her. The most meaningful result was the change in their relationship. Josie learned important skills, but Jan also felt that their bond became stronger than she had ever believed possible. Their home grew calmer and happier, filled with more trust, understanding, and joy. For Jan, choosing Building Better Dogs was not simply a decision to train Josie. It was a life-changing experience that gave both of them the foundation they needed to move forward together.
Client Testimonial
"“Working with Ron, the owner of Building Better Dogs, completely changed our life with Josie. Before training, I felt overwhelmed, discouraged, and unsure of how to help her. I knew Josie had so much potential, but I didn’t know how to bring out the best in her. Ron gave us that gift. I asked Ron to help me teach Josie leash manners because she was pulling constantly, controlling her impulse behaviors inside the house and stop chewing everything. He established that foundation with me to do that and taught me as well. From our very first session, Ron showed an incredible amount of patience, compassion, and genuine care—for both Josie and me. There was never judgment, only calm guidance, encouragement, and a deep understanding of dogs. Josie wasn’t just being trained; she was being understood. Watching her confidence grow and seeing her finally relax and succeed was incredible. Not only that, every week, he came with written instructions on how to continue to succeed in our training. So now I have a book that I can review as I continue with her training. He is just a phone call away at any time when I had questions. He was available any time for any questions that I might have. Ron has a rare ability to connect with dogs in a way that builds trust, confidence, and respect. Josie learned so much, but more importantly, our bond grew stronger than I ever thought possible. Our home is now calmer, happier and filled with so much more trust and joy. Building Better Dogs is more than a training program—it’s life-changing. I will always be grateful to Ron for what he’s done for Josie and for me. If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just want the absolute best for your dog, I cannot recommend Ron and Building Better Dogs highly enough. This was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for Josie.”"
